BERNARD ALLISON

"Across the Water"

Tone Cool Records

Bernard Allison is probably best known by most music fans as the son of the late legendary Chicago blues guitarist Luther Allison. Born in Chicago in November 1965, young Bernard was introduced to the blues by his father’s profession. Following in the footsteps of an established blues legend isn’t easy, but Bernard Allison is clearly determined to establish a unique sound that is all his own. Allison’s music blends all combinations of blues, rock, funk, soul, gospel, and R&B into one contemporary blues musical package. "Across the Water" is the younger Allison’s debut on Tone Cool Records.

After listening to this effort, I couldn’t help but wonder why Bernard Allison hasn’t been noticed by much larger audiences. He has the chops and the songwriting ability to stand toe to toe with modern blues heavyweights like Jonny Lang and Kenny Wayne Shepherd. There are no weak spots on this disc, which is filled with catchy hooks and Allison’s soulful vocals. Although a number of the slower tracks ("Love is Free" and "Work It Out") could justify radio airplay, there is certainly no evidence of Allison selling out on his roots to chase a Top 40 hit.

The opening track, "The River’s Rising", is driven by Allison’s thick guitar fills. The band also tears though a series of numbers intent on getting the listener moving. "I Just Came Back to Say Goodbye" possesses the pure punch of a blues rock classic, while "Meet Me Halfway" features the work of Allison’s wah pedal and funk rhythm. "Coming Across the Water", with it’s hauntingly distorted Gibson guitar/Marshall amplifier combination, reminds the listener of Jack Bruce singing a Cream song some 30+ years ago. "Change Your Way of Living" presents some standard I-IV-V blues playing with a great piano hook. Overall, the record is well produced and displays a thick guitar sound throughout, plus includes some nice additions like soulful female background vocalists and a strong horn section.

"Across the Water" should definitely qualify to be mentioned at the end of the year on any Top Blues Albums listing. Bernard Allison has successfully accomplished the task of absorbing his Father’s musical talent and has created a sound that is uniquely his own. No matter what your musical preferences are, this disc is worthy of a listen. You won’t be disappointed.
