Call it Dwight Yoakam Unplugged. Call it a relatively cheap, unexpensive way to make a new record (albeit with a stiff price tag of $17.98 list). But, make sure to call it a new insight to some of Yoakam’s greatest work, minus all of the mannerisms that sometimes affect his recordings.
Yoakam has mined Buck Owens’ "Bakersfield Sound" for years, and has done it proud. What has tangled him up at times has literally nothing to do with the music and all to do with image. The torn, tight jeans; the cowboy hat covering the bald spot; the leading man looks; the dating of Hollywood stars. Distractions all.
Yet, that stuff should never get in the way of one who is truly a classic country artist, at least when he wants to be. This record is an acoustic session, spotlighting his greatest songs in a good career, and that wonderful, strong voice.
Nothing else has ever been needed to enjoy Dwight Yoakam. And, nothing else is here, other than the music. Which is how it should be.
