FAMOUS
MONSTERS
"IN THE NIGHT"
BONG LOAD RECORDS

Someone's been watching too many monster movies and listening to their Ventures' albums. Considering Sean Yseult is the ex-bassist for White Zombie, the monster movie part is a given. What's surprising is the surf sound emulating from this CD; it's not expected from someone who played techno-industrial metal. Now that Rob Zombie has run off to do scary music stuff on his own, Sean has picked up a guitar and taken a detour into the reverb/surf music that's enjoying a mini-revival these days. And like most of the surf revival bands, she's gotta have a gimmick. Which is not a bad thing, but there's too much leaning on the gimmick here. In this case, the all- girl band dresses in sequined monster costumes (calling themselves "Devil Doll," "Vampire Girl," and "She-Zilla") and camps it up. The music's not bad, yet neither is it out-standing. Thirteen out of the 15 listed tracks are Yseult-penned originals that would make great party music but are marred by jokey voice-overs; it would be okay on one or two songs for laughs, but almost every song has them. There's a horribly done Cheap Trick cover ("Clock Strikes 10") and a tune from the old "Groovy Ghoulies" cartoon show. A good first-solo try, but Yseult needs to concentrate more on the music and less on the cartoon antics.
