JEFF BECK
"WHO ELSE"
EPIC RECORDS

Perhaps the most underrated and certainly the most underrecorded of all of the "guitar heroes" of the Sixties and Seventies, Englishman Jeff Beck quietly was far ahead of the crowd in both his approach to fusion, in the Seventies with Jan Hammer, and rockabilly, with his tribute to Gene Vincent in his last and only solo recording of this decade.

So, it was interesting to read that this new recording supposedly coupled sampled tracks, hiphop and other up to the minute tricks. Though, while those are evident on this new album, it is clearly Beck’s stunning guitar work that wins out.

Never a singer, Beck permits a bit of commentary, for lack of a better word, from co band members as well as a sample voice track herein. The effect is not really that different from the air blower he used in the Seventies (which was later appropriated and misattributed to Peter Frampton).

Beck’s guitar playing on this record, as well as in his live shows, takes a bit of getting used to, for it can be far from melodic and gets in a listener’s face, at times. However, his imagination, inspiration and beautiful tones are clearly the work of a master.

It is good to have him back, again.
