"RETURN OF THE GRIEVOUS ANGEL: A TRIBUTE TO GRAM PARSONS"

ALMO RECORDS

Gram Parsons, as most fans of country rock music know, is credited with being one of the originators of that hybrid song, starting in the late Sixties with the International Submarine Band, and later as the impetus for the Byrds’ seminal "Sweetheart of the Rodeo," and later the Flying Burrito Brothers.

He also has a place in pop/country music history for discovering the wondrous Emmylou Harris singing in a Washington, D.C. bar in the early Seventies. Tragically, Parsons died before he had the chance to fully explore his partnership with her, but, in organizing this tribute record, Harris continues her journey of keeping his legacy alive.

One measure on these many tribute records today is the breadth of artists who are willing to contribute to them, and this collection provides a wide range of talent. The Pretenders, with Ms. Harris, perform "She," Evan Dando and Julianna Hatfield give us a nice rendition of "$1,000 Wedding," Chris Hillman and Steve Earle do up "High Fashion Queen," and Whiskeytown, arguably carrying the Parsons flame on themselves, work through "A Song for You."

This is a sterling tribute to one of the really great writers, performers and characters of the country rock movement.
